Phonics Lab Literature Picks

At Phonics Lab, we believe strong literacy is about much more than simply recognising words or learning difficult vocabulary. It is about understanding how language works, how sentences flow, and how carefully chosen words can bring an idea to life.
Kenneth Grahame’s description of the river in The Wind in the Willows is a beautiful example:
“He thought his happiness was complete when, as he meandered aimlessly along, suddenly he stood by the edge of a full-fed river. Never in his life had he seen a river before—this sleek, sinuous, full-bodied animal, chasing and chuckling, gripping things with a gurgle and leaving them with a laugh, to fling itself on fresh playmates that shook themselves free, and were caught and held again. All was a-shake and a-shiver—glints and gleams and sparkles, rustle and swirl, chatter and bubble. The Mole was bewitched, entranced, fascinated. By the side of the river he trotted as one trots, when very small, by the side of a man who holds one spell-bound by exciting stories; and when tired at last, he sat on the bank, while the river still chattered on to him, a babbling procession of the best stories in the world, sent from the heart of the earth to be told at last to the insatiable sea.”
There is so much for young writers to learn from a passage like this.
The river is not simply described. It is given life, movement and personality. Words such as “chasing”, “chuckling”, “gurgle”, “sparkles”, “swirl” and “bubble” help the reader to see and hear the scene.
The sentence structure is just as important. The long, flowing sentences mirror the movement of the river, while the repeated sounds and carefully chosen lists create rhythm, energy and atmosphere.
This is the kind of literacy development we want children to experience: not just learning new words, but learning how vocabulary, imagery and sentence structure work together to make writing vivid and expressive.
When children regularly read high-quality texts and explore why certain sentences work so well, they begin to build a stronger feel for language. Over time, this helps them become more confident readers, more thoughtful writers and better communicators.
At Phonics Lab, we aim to help children build those foundations step by step, from secure phonics and reading skills through to richer vocabulary, stronger sentence construction and more expressive writing.
